As the Fortrend account is a US based, global stock brokerage account, you will need to complete a W8 form (W9 if you are a US citizen) telling the Internal Revenue Service that you are eligible for the benefits under the tax treaty between the US and Australia. This form must be updated every three years. If you do not have a current form on file Legent LLC (our clearing agent) is required to withhold tax on dividends and when you sell securities.
Fortrend mainly advises sophisticated investors and you will need to prove to us that you qualify as a sophisticated investor. If you are not a sophisticated investor, additional charges may apply to your account. Our Financial Services Guide (FSG) details all our fees and charges and contact us to get a copy of our FSG.
Types of accounts: If you are opening an individual account, that is all you need. If you are applying for an account in the name of a Corporation, you will need a Corporation Resolution. If you are applying for a joint account you will need a Joint Account Form. eg Mr and Mrs Forster ATF the Forster Family Superannuation Fund would require a joint account form.
If you are applying to open an account for a Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF), we may require a copy of your Trust Deed, and the SMSF’s investment strategy.
